Juan Pierre, who served as a replacement for Manny Ramirez when the Los Angeles Dodgers star was out on a Major League Baseball doping suspension, was traded to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old American batted .308 with 30 stolen bases and scored 57 runs in 145 games for the Dodgers last season, but reverted to a reserve role after Ramirez completed a 50-game suspension for violating baseball's drug policy.

The White Sox will also receive 10.5 million dollars, seven million next year and half that in 2011 to cover most of the 18.5 million dollars remaining in Pierre's contract, in exchange for two players to be named later.

"Juan always put the Dodgers first, even when it wasn't in his personal best interest," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "In this day, that is a rare attribute. He deserved the chance to play more."

Pierre, a career .301 hitter whose 459 stolen bases lead all active major league players, was a member of the 2003 World Series champion Florida Marlins. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen was an assistant coach on that team.

Pierre has also played for Colorado and the Chicago Cubs in a 10-year career.
