Ichiro wins ninth consecutive Gold Glove

<div><p>Japanese star Ichiro Suzuki and fellow outfielder Torii Hunter each won a ninth consecutive American League Gold Glove Award for fielding skills, Major League baseball announced Tuesday.</p><p>Suzuki, a top hitter for the Seattle Mariners, made only five errors all season in 2009. He also has such an accurate arm for throwing out runners from a distance that few are willing to test him but still he managed five assists in 145 games.</p><p>Hunter, who helped the Los Angeles Angels reach the American League finals, lost a month of the season by crashing into an outfield wall. At the plate he smacked 22 home runs and drove in 90.</p><p>The World Series champion New York Yankees had two members of the honor squad, first baseman Mark Teixeira and 35-year-old shortstop Derek Jeter.</p><p>"Tex" won his third career Gold Glove, but his first since 2006, by making only four errors in 1,275 chances. At the plate he smashed 39 homers and brought in 122 runs.</p><p>Jeter's fourth Gold Glove was his first since a run of three in a row ended in 2006.</p><p>Other Gold Gloves went to Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco, Tampa Bay third baseman Evan Longoria, Baltimore centerfielder Adam Jones, Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle.</p><img src="http://admatch-syndication.mochila.com/images/ad.gif?aid=63078206&bid=informcom" /></div><div id="copyright"><div>
