James Bond?s Prague

Hear about some of the most famous films shot on location in Prague and where the actors chose to stay whilst shooting in the Bohemian city.

A couple of years ago I had a bit of a shock when I was carrying out my standard Prague airport to city route, I turned to go down to the Karolinska and came face-to-face with Daniel Craig, who was shooting scenes for his first Bond movie ?Casino Royale?. I later watched the film and discovered that Danube House on the Karolinska is where Bond first earned his license to kill.

After Bond killed Mollaka, M got a bit of a dressing down from her superiors in the House of Commons. However, I instantly recognised the committee room as not in London, but rather as the library of Strahov Monastery. This historical library is open daily for a small charge and I often recommend that Bond fans take a visit. If the place looked strangely familiar, even before Casino Royale this may be because the Johnny Depp film ?From Hell? was also filmed in parts in this library.

I also recognised the so-called Miami Airport as Prague?s Ruzyne Airport, and I should know - I visit it almost every day on my Prague airport to city jaunts. Prague also stood in for Miami when Bond visited The Bodyworlds Exhibition. This exhibition was actually held in Vitkov Park in the Vitkov Monument, which affords spectacular views all over Prague. Occasionally the Vitkov Monument is open for special events and if this coincides with your visit then I definitely recommend checking it out.

James Bond must have loved the Czech Republic, as the town of Karlovy Vary, located on the outskirts of Prague and somewhere I occasionally deliver passengers to, stands in for Montenegro. The spectacular Grandhotel Pupp stands in for the Hotel Splendide, where Vesper and Bond stay before the competition. You may also recognise this hotel as the place Queen Latifah stayed in the film ?Last Holiday?. The Casino Royale itself is actually the Kaiserbad Spa and the town Bond meets his contact Matthias is the small town of Loket.

Supposedly Bond and Vesper then head over to Venice and check into a luxurious hotel with stunning views of the Piazza San Marco. However, this grand hotel is a place that many of my passengers ask to see on their Prague airport to city transfers ? Prague?s National History Museum. Strangely most of the people that I take there aren?t as interested in the history as the fact that this place was the scene of the disastrous operation at the beginning of Tom Cruise?s Mission Impossible. The museum is located on Wenceslas Square and contains several million items, which are definitely worth looking around. Many other scenes in Prague where shot in the Barrandov Studios, which is one of the most sought after studios in Europe.

If you have the chance whilst in Prague, make like James Bond and try your luck in the Casino Ambassador. We can?t promise that you?ll win quite as much as Bond, but if you?re lucky you may come away something of a Miss Moneypenny.
