Fernandez, Randall lead No. 16 Temple to sixth straight win in 62-45 victory over Fordham

Juan Fernandez scored 13 points, Scootie Randall had 12, and No. 16 Temple came on after a poor-shooting opening half to beat Fordham 62-45 on Saturday, extending the Owls' winning streak to six and the Rams' losing streak to 11.

The Owls (17-3, 5-0 Atlantic 10) won for the 13th time in 14 games. They are the lone Atlantic 10 team that's undefeated in conference play and have their best record after 20 games since their 1993-94 team also began at 17-3.

Chris Gaston had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams (2-16, 0-6), who are 1-12 since Jared Grasso took over as interim coach after Dereck Whittenburg was fired.

Fordham fell to 6-91 against ranked teams since The Associated Press began its weekly polls in 1948.

Temple led 23-19 at the half and went on a 16-4 burst to start the second half. Fernandez made a pair of 3-pointers in the first minute and a half and Randall added two more to key the run.

Fernandez was shaken up near the midpoint of the second half. He walked off holding a towel to his face and didn't return, although he appeared to be OK on the bench.

The Owls eventually led by as many as 23 while shooting 66.7 percent from the floor after the intermission.

In the first half, Fordham struggled with its shooting touch against the A-10's top-ranked defense in scoring and field-goal percentage. But Temple, which was coming off a 77-72 home victory over Xavier on Wednesday, struggled mightily as well against the A-10's lowest-ranked scoring defense, especially from outside. The Owls shot 28 percent, including 16.7 percent (2 of 12) from 3-point range. The Rams, playing at a slow pace, only shot 26.9 percent in the half. Both teams made just seven field goals.

When Gaston scored from in close, he had eight points and Fordham had an 11-10 lead with 9:24 to go in the half. A little more than a minute later, Fernandez nailed a 3 to give Temple the lead again at 13-11.

The Rams, who started three freshmen and a sophomore, never got it back. They fell behind by as many as six before heading to the locker room down three thanks to a 3-pointer by Danny Thompson just before the half expired. It marked the sixth time this season that Temple had held a team to under 20 points in the first half.
